Pilates Frequently Asked Questions
Is Pilates right for me?
Pilates is for everyone, from young to old, sedentary to athletic. It is for people who are strong or weak, flexible or inflexible. It is for pregnant women, is great for rehabilitation from injury, and is often recommended by doctors, physical therapists and chiropractors. Pilates can be used as a complete fitness program as well as a supplement to other methods of fitness, or as a tool to educate the body to have better posture, or to move in a more effective way.
How long before I notice results?
This depends greatly on what your initial expectations are and what your goals are. New students often say they feel great after their first class, both lengthened and more in tune with their bodies. After a Pilates session you will probably feel like you have done a seriously worthwhile 'work-out', not because it is a vigorous session that will leave you breathless, but simply because Pilates focuses on specific muscles and muscle groups in ways which many people are not used to.
It is recommended that Pilates be practiced several times a week over an extended period to get the best results. If your goals are to rehabilitate after injury or streamline your physique, these specific results may become more noticeable after regular Pilates practice.
What is the difference between Pilates and Yoga?
Though some Pilates exercises are similar to Yoga, Pilates does not involve holding poses. Instead, one flows through the exercises. The breathing technique used is difference from that used in Yoga. Pilates focuses on strengthening the deep stabilizing postural muscles. Pilates also has apparatuses to enhance your workout.
How often should I do Pilates?
Two to three times a week is an ideal amount. Like any form of exercise, consistency is key, and it is helpful to not let too much time pass in order to remember the previous lesson and incorporate the information in your body. You will be happy at how you look and feel after just a few weeks.
What should I wear?
Dress comfortably so that your movement is free, but try not to wear clothing that is TOO loose fitting. It is important that the instructor be able to observe your body as you move. You will not wear sneakers but please bring socks.
Should I eat before a Pilates session?
A light snack beforehand is fine, but it's a good idea not to eat a heavy meal directly before exercising.
